Autumn · Hathaura Color Standard v1.0
Soft Autumn Color Palette: Best Colors & Celebrities
Soft Autumn is a muted, warm-leaning season with medium value and low contrast. It is defined first by softness (low chroma), then by warmth: its best colors are earthy, gently greyed and blended, never bright, icy or stark.
Moodboard and outfit are AI-generated illustrations. Celebrity photos are credited in the celebrities section.
If you have ever been told you look "washed out" in black, "harsh" in bright white, and somehow more like yourself in a camel sweater or a sage linen shirt, you may be a Soft Autumn. This guide covers how to recognize the season, the exact colors that flatter it (with hex codes you can shop with), what to avoid and why, how to build outfits and a capsule wardrobe, makeup and hair direction, and how to tell Soft Autumn apart from its closest neighbors.

Where Soft Autumn sits among the 12 seasons
How to recognize a Soft Autumn
Skin
Skin is neutral-warm: beige, golden-beige, olive-beige or warm brown, often with a soft, matte quality rather than a glow. Undertones are warm but quiet, so many Soft Autumns can wear both gold and silver, with gold usually winning by a small margin. Soft Autumn exists across every skin depth, from fair to deep.
Eyes
Eyes are usually blended and soft rather than sparkling: hazel, soft olive, grey-green, warm grey-blue, or light-to-medium warm brown, often with several colors mixed together and no sharp ring around the iris.
Hair
Natural hair tends to be medium in depth and slightly ashy-warm: dark blonde, "mousy" light brown, soft golden brown, muted strawberry blonde or medium brown with a soft, low-shine finish. Hair alone is an unreliable clue, because dye, sun and age change it more than skin or eyes.
Signs you're a Soft Autumn
- Your features blend into each other. Nothing about your coloring "jumps" first: not your eyes, not your hair, not your skin.
- Black looks heavy on you. It drains color from your face and makes shadows under your eyes more noticeable, while chocolate brown or soft navy looks easy and natural.
- Cream and ivory flatter you more than bright white, which can make your skin look sallow or grey by comparison.
- Gold jewelry looks a little more natural than shiny silver, but matte or brushed silver and pewter also work.
- Very bright colors (neon, hot pink, cobalt, true red) arrive in the room before you do. People notice the color first and your face second.
- You get compliments in earthy, slightly dusty colors: camel, olive, sage, terracotta, soft teal, mushroom.
Signs you're probably not a Soft Autumn
- Your eyes are vivid and clearly defined (bright blue, emerald green, very dark brown with crisp whites). That points toward a brighter or deeper season.
- You have strong contrast between very dark hair and light skin. Soft Autumn is a low-contrast season.
- Golden yellow, tomato red and bright orange look rich and healthy on you rather than overpowering. That points toward Warm Autumn or Warm Spring.
- Cool, rosy colors such as lavender, raspberry and blue-grey look better than any warm color. That points toward Soft Summer or Cool Summer.
The most common mistype
The most common mistype is Soft Summer. Both seasons are muted, medium-value and low-contrast, so in poor lighting they can look identical. The difference is the undertone: Soft Autumn looks better in warm, golden-leaning muted colors (camel, olive, terracotta); Soft Summer looks better in cool, rose-leaning muted colors (greige, dusty rose, blue-grey). The second most common mistype is Warm Autumn, especially for people with warm golden hair: Warm Autumn can carry brighter, more saturated spice colors that would overpower a Soft Autumn.
Soft Autumn contrast level
Contrast is the difference in depth between your skin, hair and eyes. Soft Autumns are typically low to medium-low: the hair is not much darker than the skin, and the eyes do not stand out sharply. That is why high-contrast outfits (black with white, navy with bright white) overpower Soft Autumns, while tone-on-tone and gently contrasting combinations look polished.
Lighting and camera caveats

stylist re-analyses on the Hathaura platform changed season (small sample)
Lighting changes everything. Warm indoor bulbs add yellow to every color and every skin tone, which can push a Soft Summer toward Soft Autumn in a selfie, and a cool phone flash can do the opposite. When people retook selfie analyses on ColorSnap AI (our own free tool), their season changed 62% of the time (56 of 90 retakes). When stylists re-analyzed a client on the Hathaura platform with a new photo, the season changed once in 15 re-analyses, a small sample but a very different picture. For a reliable read, test colors in indirect daylight near a window, with no makeup, no filters and hair pulled back, and compare two colors at a time. Compare color analysis apps.
Soft Autumn drape tests
Hold each pair of colors under your chin in daylight, one at a time, and watch your skin, not the fabric.
| Test | Soft Autumn color | Compare with | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Softness test | Rust #905048 | Warm Autumn Rust #A83828 | In the muted rust, skin looks even and the eyes lead. In the brighter rust, the color dominates and the face can look flushed or sallow. |
| Warmth test | Camel #B8A078 | Soft Summer Taupe #B5A8A0 | Camel should warm the complexion and soften shadows. If the cool greige looks fresher and camel looks yellow, consider Soft Summer. |
| White test | Cream #E8DED0 | Optical White #FFFFFF | Cream should look clean and harmonious. Bright white tends to look stark and make skin look grey or uneven on a Soft Autumn. |
| Dark neutral test | Chocolate #6C5040 | Jet Black #111111 | Chocolate should define the face gently. Black tends to sit in front of the face and deepen under-eye shadows. |
| Green test | Olive Green #6C9068 | Pewter Blue #7A8297 | A Soft Autumn usually looks warmer and more rested in olive; a Soft Summer looks better in the blue-grey. |
| Brightness test | Dusty Blue #6888A0 | Bright Winter Royal Blue #3860B8 | The dusty blue should blend with your coloring. The vivid royal blue should look like it is wearing you. |
Soft Autumn color palette: the best colors
Soft Autumn colors are warm, but quietly so, and always slightly greyed. Think of the colors of a woodland in late autumn seen through light mist: moss and olive, camel and toffee, sage and soft teal-blue, terracotta and muted rose, plum and cocoa. Every color has some grey or brown mixed in, which is what lets it sit in harmony with soft, blended coloring.
The palette is built on medium values. Very pale colors can look insipid and very dark colors can look heavy, so the most flattering choices sit in the middle, with cream and chocolate as the lightest and darkest neutrals. Medium-light and medium-dark shades are your workhorses.
Use the measured ranges as a shopping check: Soft Autumn colors fall within a narrow chroma band (softly muted), with hues concentrated in the yellow-red-to-green range plus soft, greyed blues. A color that looks "clean", "electric" or "icy" is almost always outside the range.

Colors to avoid for Soft Autumn
- Anything bright or saturated (neon, cobalt, fuchsia, true red) overwhelms Soft Autumn coloring.
- Anything icy or very cool (icy pastels, blue-white, silver-grey with no warmth) clashes with the warm undertone.
- Stark extremes (jet black, optical white, and the two together) create more contrast than your coloring has.
- Very pale pastels can make Soft Autumns look tired, because they are too light and too clear at the same time.
Swap this for that
Jet Black #111111 → Chocolate #6C5040
Too dark and stark; it deepens shadows under the eyes.
Optical White #FFFFFF → Cream #E8DED0
Too bright and cool; skin can look grey next to it.
Bright Winter Fuchsia #C83888 → Plum #784048
Too saturated and too cool for soft coloring.
Bright Winter Royal Blue #3860B8 → Dusty Blue #6888A0
Too bright; the color arrives before your face does.
Lime #98C838 → Olive Green #6C9068
Too bright and too clear.
Light Pink #E8C8E0 → Dusty Pink #C89890
Icy and cool against warm skin.
Best neutrals for Soft Autumn
Your neutrals are warm and softly muted: cream, sand, khaki, camel, mushroom, warm grey, olive-brown, cocoa and chocolate, plus a softened navy.
Swap black for chocolate, cocoa or navy. Swap bright white for cream. Swap cool charcoal for warm grey or olive-brown.
Neutrals do most of the work in a Soft Autumn wardrobe. Build trousers, coats, knitwear and bags in neutrals, then add color near the face.
Soft Autumn outfits, clothing and color combinations
The best Soft Autumn combinations repeat the low contrast of your coloring. Tone-on-tone outfits (several shades of one color) and analogous outfits (neighboring colors such as olive and camel) look effortless. When you want more interest, use a balanced contrast: two colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, both muted, such as rose with sage.
Use proportions to keep outfits calm: about 60% main color (usually a neutral), 30% secondary color, and 10% accent, worn near the face or as a single accessory.

Prints, fabrics, metals and jewelry for Soft Autumn

Prints and patterns
- Choose soft, blended prints with low internal contrast: watercolor florals, tonal paisleys, soft plaids, heathered tweeds and nature motifs such as leaves and botanicals.
- Keep at least 60–70% of a print's colors inside your palette, and make sure the print has no stark black-on-white areas.
- Medium-scale prints look most natural. Very small, crisp prints can look busy; very large, high-contrast graphics overpower soft coloring.
- Animal prints work in their softer, warmer versions (sandy leopard, mushroom snake) rather than black-and-white.
Fabrics and finishes
- Matte and soft-sheen textures echo Soft Autumn coloring: suede, brushed cotton, linen, cashmere, merino, raw silk, washed silk, corduroy and tweed.
- High-shine fabrics (patent leather, glossy satin, lamé, high-gloss sequins) add a brightness your coloring does not have. For evening, choose matte satin, velvet or a subtle metallic thread instead.
- Texture adds interest without contrast. A tone-on-tone outfit in three textures (knit, suede, linen) looks richer than one flat fabric.
Best metals for Soft Autumn
Because the undertone is warm but quiet, many Soft Autumns can wear both gold and silver. Gold usually looks a touch better, and brushed, matte or antique finishes look better than high polish. Rose gold works best in its softer, warmer versions.
Best
Soft yellow gold, Bronze, Brushed or antique gold
Also good
Copper, Matte silver, Pewter
Use with care
Polished bright silver, Platinum, Very yellow, high-shine gold
Stones: Smoky quartz, Topaz, Peridot, Amber, Tiger's eye, Jade, Moonstone, Matte pearls in cream or champagne.
- Glasses frames: tortoiseshell, soft brown, olive, honey, warm grey, or brushed gold metal. Avoid black and bright colored frames.
- Nails: nude-caramel, mushroom, terracotta, muted rose, soft plum, olive; matte or cream finishes.
- Bags and shoes: cognac, toffee, chocolate, taupe and olive leather rather than black.
Soft Autumn makeup and hair colors

Foundation
Look for neutral-warm shades, often labeled NW, in a matte, satin or natural finish. Very dewy, high-glow formulas can clash with soft coloring. Test in daylight on the jawline.
Blush and bronzer
Soft peach, muted terracotta, warm rose and soft brick. A matte bronzer with a neutral-warm base adds depth without shine.
Lips
Terracotta, caramel and warm nudes for every day; muted brick, rose-brown and soft plum for evening. Avoid icy pinks, blue-reds and very bright corals.
Eyes
Warm browns (sand, camel, milk chocolate), olive, khaki, soft copper and muted bronze. Muted burgundy adds depth for evening.
Liner and mascara
Brown, brown-black, espresso, olive or aubergine rather than jet black, which can look harsh against blended coloring.

Best hair colors for Soft Autumn
Soft Autumns look best in hair colors that stay warm-leaning and softly blended: golden or neutral light-to-medium brown, dark blonde with soft honey or caramel, muted strawberry blonde, and soft auburn-brown.
Avoid colors that add contrast or clarity your skin does not have: jet black, blue-black, platinum, icy ash blonde and vivid copper or red.
Dimension helps. Soft balayage or babylights one or two shades around your natural color look richer than a single flat shade.
Talking to your colourist
- Bring this phrase: "I'm a Soft Autumn: warm-neutral and muted. I want a soft, warm-neutral color with low contrast, nothing ashy-cool or brassy."
- Ask for neutral, golden or beige tones (often called N, G or beige series) rather than pure ash or bright copper.
- Keep the color within about two levels of your natural depth so the hair does not overpower your face.
- Ask for a gloss or toner every few months to keep warmth soft rather than brassy.
- Bring photos of the result you want in daylight, not under salon lights.
Soft Autumn going grey and over 50
Going grey as a Soft Autumn
- Natural grey on a Soft Autumn is usually a soft, warm or "oyster" grey that blends easily, because the season is already muted and low-contrast.
- If you are going grey, warm blending (soft highlights in sand or champagne) eases the transition better than covering it with one dark shade, which adds contrast as roots grow.
- Once your hair is lighter, lean on the lighter half of your palette near the face (cream, sand, sage, dusty blue) and keep the deeper neutrals for trousers, coats and bags.
Soft Autumn over 50
- Your season does not usually change with age, but your contrast and depth often soften. Colors that were "fine" may start to look heavy; the softest, mid-value colors in the palette tend to look best.
- Black and very dark colors become harder to wear as coloring softens. Chocolate, cocoa and navy keep definition without adding age.
- Warmth near the face (camel, terracotta, peach-rose blush) restores color that skin loses over time.
- Matte or satin makeup and fabrics stay flattering; high-shine finishes can emphasize texture.
Soft Autumn vs. neighboring seasons

| Season | Undertone | Value | Chroma | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft Autumn | Neutral-warm | Medium | Soft (muted) | Misty, blended, earthy |
| Warm Autumn | Warm | Medium-deep | Medium-rich | Golden, spicy, rich |

| Soft Autumn | Cream | Camel | Cocoa | Chocolate | Navy | Sea Green | Dusty Pink | Salmon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft Summer | Soft White | Greige | Cocoa | Umber | Deep Blue | Mint | Pink | Rose Brown |
Soft Autumn vs. Soft Summer
What they share: Both are soft (muted) seasons with medium value and low contrast.
What separates them: Undertone. Soft Autumn is neutral-warm; Soft Summer is neutral-cool.
Drape test: Hold camel and a cool greige under your chin in daylight. The one that makes skin look even and rested (rather than yellow or grey) is your side of the line.
Soft Autumn vs. Warm Autumn (True Autumn)
What they share: Both are warm-leaning Autumn seasons with earthy palettes.
What separates them: Chroma. Soft Autumn is muted; Warm Autumn is richer and more saturated.
Drape test: Compare a muted rust with a vivid rust. If the vivid one looks rich rather than overpowering, you are probably Warm Autumn.

Making the change to a Soft Autumn wardrobe
- Don't throw everything out. Sort your wardrobe into three piles: in-palette, close (wearable with help), and out.
- Move out-of-palette colors away from your face. A black skirt or bright trousers can stay; a black top can be worn under a cream or camel layer, or with a scarf in your colors.
- Replace the pieces you wear most first: coat, everyday knitwear and your most-worn tops.
- Shop with your palette on your phone. Compare the item to your swatches in daylight before buying.
- Change makeup and glasses frames early: they sit closest to your face and make the biggest difference for the least money.
- Give it four to six weeks. Most people notice they get more compliments and spend less time deciding what to wear.
Self-test: are you a Soft Autumn?
Six or seven "yes" answers: Soft Autumn is very likely. Four or five: you are probably a Soft season; check the Soft Summer and Warm Autumn comparisons below. Three or fewer: look at the other seasons in the Hathaura Color Standard, or book a professional analysis.
Soft Autumn FAQ
What colors look best on a Soft Autumn?
Warm, softly muted, medium-value colors: camel, sand, mushroom, olive, moss, sage, soft teal-blue, terracotta, muted rose, rust and plum. Every color has some grey or brown mixed in.
Can Soft Autumns wear black?
Not near the face, ideally. Black is too dark and stark for blended coloring. Chocolate, cocoa and navy give the same definition. If you love black, wear it on the lower half or with a cream or camel layer near your face.
Can Soft Autumns wear white?
Choose cream, ivory or soft oyster instead of bright optical white, which can make Soft Autumn skin look grey or sallow.
Is Soft Autumn warm or cool?
Neutral-warm. It is the least warm of the Autumn seasons, which is why Soft Autumns can often wear soft silver and why the season is so often confused with Soft Summer.
What is the difference between Soft Autumn and Soft Summer?
Both are muted and low-contrast. Soft Autumn leans warm (camel, olive, terracotta); Soft Summer leans cool (greige, dusty rose, blue-grey). Test a warm and a cool muted color side by side in daylight.
Can Soft Autumns wear gold or silver jewelry?
Both, usually. Soft yellow gold, bronze and antique gold are the best match; matte silver and pewter also work. Avoid very bright, polished finishes.
What hair color suits a Soft Autumn?
Soft, warm-neutral shades within about two levels of your natural color: golden or neutral brown, dark blonde with honey or caramel, muted strawberry blonde or soft auburn-brown. Avoid jet black, platinum and icy ash.
Is a selfie color analysis app accurate for Soft Autumn?
It can be a useful first read, but lighting matters a lot for muted seasons. In our data, when people retook a selfie analysis, the season changed 62% of the time. Use daylight, no filters, and confirm with drape tests or a professional.
Can your season change from Soft Autumn as you age?
Your underlying season usually stays the same, but contrast and depth often soften with age and greying hair. Many Soft Autumns find the lighter, softest colors in the palette work best later in life.
