Summer · Hathaura Color Standard v1.0
Cool Summer (True Summer) Color Palette & Celebrities
Cool Summer is the coolest of the Summer seasons: rosy, light-to-medium and softly muted. It is defined first by coolness, then by softness: its best colors are blue-based and gentle, never golden or harsh.
Moodboard and outfit are AI-generated illustrations. Celebrity photos are credited in the celebrities section.
If gold jewelry has always looked a little "off" on you, warm browns and oranges make your skin look sallow, and a powder-blue shirt or a dusty-rose sweater gets you compliments every time, you may be a Cool Summer. This guide covers how to recognize the season, the exact colors that flatter it (with hex codes you can shop with), what to avoid and why, how to build outfits and a capsule wardrobe, makeup and hair direction, and how to tell Cool Summer apart from its closest neighbors.

Where Cool Summer sits among the 12 seasons
How to recognize a Cool Summer
Skin
Skin is cool: pink, rosy, blue-pink or ash-beige rather than golden or peachy. Many Cool Summers flush easily and some have visible redness on the cheeks or nose. Golden or yellow undertones are absent or very faint, which is why silver looks clearly better than gold. Cool Summer exists across skin depths, from fair porcelain to cool brown with an ashy or rosy cast.
Eyes
Eyes are cool and gentle rather than sparkling: grey-blue, soft blue, blue-green, cool grey, cool hazel or soft cool brown. The color is clear enough to read as cool but not vivid, and there is often a soft grey ring around the iris.
Hair
Natural hair is usually light-to-medium and ashy: ash blonde, dark ash blonde, cool light brown, mousy brown, or cool medium-to-dark brown on deeper skin, with no red or gold glints in daylight. Cool Summers often grey early to a soft silver. Hair alone is an unreliable clue, because dye, sun and age change it more than skin or eyes.
Signs you're a Cool Summer
- Silver, white gold and platinum look natural on you. Yellow gold can look brassy or make your skin look slightly yellow.
- Warm colors (orange, mustard, camel, tomato red) make your skin look sallow, tired or ruddy, while cool rose, blue and lavender make it look even and fresh.
- Your coloring is gentle rather than dramatic. Nothing about your face is stark: not the hair against the skin, not the whites of your eyes.
- Black looks heavy on you. It drains color from your face and deepens shadows, while navy or slate looks polished and easy.
- Very bright, saturated colors (cobalt, fuchsia, true red) look striking but loud. People notice the color before they notice you.
- You get compliments in cool, softened colors: powder blue, dusty rose, lavender, raspberry, soft teal, slate.
Signs you're probably not a Cool Summer
- Golden yellow, camel, rust and orange look rich and healthy on you. That points toward a warm season, not Cool Summer.
- You have strong contrast between very dark hair and light skin, or eyes that look vivid and crisp. That points toward Cool Winter or a brighter season.
- Your best colors are smoky and greyed, and clearer cool colors such as raspberry or cornflower feel too sharp. That points toward Soft Summer.
- You look best in very pale, airy pastels and medium colors look heavy on you. That points toward Light Summer.
The most common mistype
The most common mistype is Soft Summer. Both seasons are cool and gently muted, so in poor lighting they can look identical. The difference is which quality leads: Cool Summer is defined first by coolness and can carry slightly clearer cool colors (raspberry, cornflower, soft teal); Soft Summer is defined first by softness and looks better in smokier, greyer versions (rose-brown, pewter blue, charcoal). The second most common mistype is Cool Winter, especially for Cool Summers with dark hair: both are fully cool, but Cool Winter needs saturated, high-contrast colors that would overpower a Cool Summer.
Cool Summer contrast level
Contrast is the difference in depth between your skin, hair and eyes. Cool Summers are typically low to medium: the hair is somewhat darker than the skin, but the overall look is gentle rather than dramatic. That is why black with white overpowers a Cool Summer, while navy with powder blue, or slate with dusty rose, looks polished and natural.
Lighting and camera caveats

stylist re-analyses on the Hathaura platform changed season (small sample)
Lighting changes everything. Warm indoor bulbs add yellow to every color and every skin tone, which can make a Cool Summer look neutral or even warm in a selfie, and a harsh cool phone flash adds contrast that can push a Cool Summer toward Cool Winter. When people retook selfie analyses on ColorSnap AI (our own free tool), their season changed 62% of the time (56 of 90 retakes). When stylists re-analyzed a client on the Hathaura platform with a new photo, the season changed once in 15 re-analyses, a small sample but a very different picture. For a reliable read, test colors in indirect daylight near a window, with no makeup, no filters and hair pulled back, and compare two colors at a time. Compare color analysis apps.
Cool Summer drape tests
Hold each pair of colors under your chin in daylight, one at a time, and watch your skin, not the fabric.
| Test | Cool Summer color | Compare with | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolness test | Dusty Rose #B67A98 | Soft Autumn Terracotta #A85850 | In the cool rose, skin looks even and fresh. In the warm terracotta, skin can look sallow or ruddy and the redness in the cheeks shows more. |
| Neutral test | Slate #6A7A8C | Warm Autumn Camel #C0A068 | Slate should make the complexion look clear and calm. Camel tends to make Cool Summer skin look yellow or tired. |
| Clarity test | Raspberry #CF5378 | Rose Brown #906C64 | A Cool Summer usually looks livelier in the cooler, slightly clearer raspberry; a Soft Summer looks better in the smoky rose-brown. |
| Softness test | Royal Blue #5E7BA8 | Cool Winter Cobalt #243090 | The softened blue should blend with your coloring. The saturated cobalt should look like it is wearing you. |
| Dark neutral test | Navy #28406C | Jet Black #111111 | Navy should define the face gently. Black tends to sit in front of the face and deepen under-eye shadows. |
| White test | Soft Pink #E8C4CF | Optical White #FFFFFF | A soft, cool light shade should brighten the face gently. Bright white tends to look stark and make features look faded. |
Cool Summer color palette: the best colors
Cool Summer colors are blue-based first and softened second. Think of the colors of a summer coastline on a hazy morning: powder blue and cornflower, sea green and soft teal, dusty rose and raspberry, lavender and plum-purple, slate and navy. Every color leans cool, with a little grey mixed in, which is what lets it sit in harmony with cool, gentle coloring.
The palette is built on light-to-medium values. Very dark colors can look heavy and very pale ones can look washed out, so the most flattering choices sit in the middle, with soft pink and powder blue at the light end and navy and midnight at the dark end. Medium blues, roses and purples are your workhorses.
Use the measured ranges as a shopping check: Cool Summer colors fall within a soft-to-medium chroma band, with hues concentrated in blue, blue-green, rose and violet. A color that looks "golden", "earthy" or "electric" is almost always outside the range.

Colors to avoid for Cool Summer
- Anything warm or golden (orange, mustard, camel, rust, tomato red) clashes with the cool undertone and can make skin look sallow.
- Anything very bright or saturated (cobalt, fuchsia, neon, true red) overwhelms gentle Cool Summer coloring.
- Stark extremes (jet black, optical white, and the two together) create more contrast than your coloring has.
- Earthy, brownish colors (olive, khaki, chocolate, warm beige) look muddy and heavy against cool skin.
Swap this for that
Jet Black #111111 → Navy #28406C
Too dark and stark; it deepens shadows under the eyes.
Optical White #FFFFFF → Soft Gray #B8B8A8
Too bright; it makes features look faded.
Soft Autumn Camel #B8A078 → Slate #6A7A8C
Too golden; skin can look yellow next to it.
Warm Autumn Mustard #C89830 → Soft Yellow #E8DD9F
Too warm and too heavy for cool coloring.
Cool Winter Cobalt #243090 → Royal Blue #5E7BA8
Too saturated; the color arrives before your face does.
Bright Winter Fuchsia #C83888 → Raspberry #CF5378
Too bright and too strong for gentle coloring.
Best neutrals for Cool Summer
Your neutrals are cool and softly muted: soft white, soft gray, slate, steel blue, cool taupe, navy, midnight blue and navy-purple.
Swap black for navy, midnight or slate. Swap bright white for a soft, slightly greyed white. Swap camel and warm beige for soft gray or cool taupe.
Neutrals do most of the work in a Cool Summer wardrobe. Build trousers, coats, knitwear and bags in neutrals, then add rose, blue or lavender near the face.
Cool Summer outfits, clothing and color combinations
The best Cool Summer combinations repeat the gentle, low-to-medium contrast of your coloring. Tone-on-tone outfits (several shades of one blue) and analogous outfits (neighboring colors such as lavender and dusty rose) look effortless. When you want more interest, use a balanced contrast: two cool colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, both softened, such as raspberry with teal.
Use proportions to keep outfits calm: about 60% main color (usually a neutral), 30% secondary color, and 10% accent, worn near the face or as a single accessory.

Prints, fabrics, metals and jewelry for Cool Summer

Prints and patterns
- Choose soft, cool prints with gentle internal contrast: watercolor florals, soft stripes, gingham, paisley, small geometrics and fine houndstooth in blues, roses, lavenders and greys.
- Keep at least 60–70% of a print's colors inside your palette, and make sure the print has no stark black-on-white areas or golden, earthy tones.
- Small-to-medium prints look most natural. Very large, high-contrast graphics overpower gentle coloring.
- Animal prints work only in their cool, softened versions (grey snake, blue-grey leopard) rather than golden or black-and-white.
Fabrics and finishes
- Soft-sheen and smooth textures echo Cool Summer coloring: silk, satin-finish cotton, fine merino, cashmere, chambray, linen, jersey and soft lace.
- Very high-shine fabrics (patent leather, lamé, mirror sequins) add a hardness your coloring does not have, and heavy, rough, earthy textures can look dull. For evening, choose silk satin, chiffon, velvet or a subtle silver thread.
- Texture adds interest without contrast. A tone-on-tone outfit in three textures (knit, silk, chambray) looks richer than one flat fabric.
Best metals for Cool Summer
Because the undertone is fully cool, silver-toned metals are the clear winner for Cool Summers. A soft polish suits the season better than a mirror shine or a heavy oxidized finish. If you love warm metals, rose gold is the easiest to wear, and yellow gold works best mixed with silver or kept away from the face.
Best
Polished silver, White gold, Platinum
Also good
Rose gold, Pewter, Brushed silver
Use with care
Yellow gold, Bronze, Copper
Stones: Aquamarine, Sapphire, Amethyst, Moonstone, Blue topaz, Rose quartz, Smoky quartz, White or pink pearls.
- Glasses frames: grey, slate, navy, soft burgundy, rose, clear crystal or silver metal. Avoid warm tortoiseshell, gold and black frames.
- Nails: rosy nude, dusty rose, mauve, raspberry, berry, lavender, soft grey; cream or soft-sheen finishes.
- Bags and shoes: grey, navy, slate, cool taupe, burgundy and soft metallic silver leather rather than black or tan.
Cool Summer makeup and hair colors

Foundation
Look for cool or neutral-cool shades with a pink or rosy base, in a matte, satin or natural finish. Shades with a yellow or golden base can look like a mask on cool skin. Test in daylight on the jawline.
Blush and bronzer
Soft pink, mauve, cool rose and soft berry, applied lightly and blended. Skip orange-based bronzers; if you want warmth, use a cool, greyish-taupe contour instead.
Lips
Rosy nudes, dusty rose and mauve for every day; raspberry, berry and soft wine for evening. Avoid orange, coral, brick and very bright fuchsia.
Eyes
Cool greys, slate, soft blue, lavender, mauve, taupe and soft silver. Plum and navy-purple add depth for evening.
Liner and mascara
Navy, charcoal, slate or plum rather than jet black, which can look harsh against gentle coloring. Brown-black works if you want a classic look.

Best hair colors for Cool Summer
Cool Summers look best in hair colors that stay cool and softly blended: ash blonde, cool beige blonde, ash light-to-medium brown, cool dark brown and soft silver.
Avoid colors that add warmth or harshness your skin does not have: golden or honey blonde, copper, red, caramel, jet black and blue-black.
Dimension helps. Fine, cool-toned highlights or lowlights one or two shades around your natural color look richer than a single flat shade.
Talking to your colourist
- Bring this phrase: "I'm a Cool Summer: cool and softly muted. I want a cool, ashy color with gentle contrast, nothing golden, brassy or very dark."
- Ask for ash, cool or beige-ash tones (often called A, V or cool series) rather than golden, copper or warm tones.
- Keep the color within about two levels of your natural depth so the hair does not overpower your face.
- Ask for a cool gloss or toner every few months to keep brassiness away, and use a purple or blue shampoo at home if you are lightened.
- Bring photos of the result you want in daylight, not under salon lights.
Cool Summer going grey and over 50
Going grey as a Cool Summer
- Natural grey on a Cool Summer is usually a soft, cool silver that suits the season well, because the palette is already cool and gentle.
- If you are going grey, cool blending (ash or silver highlights) eases the transition better than covering it with one dark shade, which adds contrast as roots grow.
- Once your hair is lighter, lean on the lighter half of your palette near the face (powder blue, soft pink, lavender, seafoam) and keep navy and slate for trousers, coats and bags.
Cool Summer over 50
- Your season does not usually change with age, but your contrast and depth often soften. Colors that were "fine" may start to look heavy; the softer, lighter colors in the palette tend to look best.
- Black and very dark colors become harder to wear as coloring softens. Navy, slate and soft gray keep definition without adding age.
- Cool color near the face (dusty rose, raspberry, a soft pink blush) restores color that skin loses over time.
- Satin and soft-sheen makeup and fabrics stay flattering; very matte, heavy finishes can look flat, and high-shine finishes can emphasize texture.

Cool Summer vs. Light Summer
What they share: Both are cool, soft Summer seasons with low contrast.
What separates them: Value and coolness. Cool Summer is fully cool and can carry medium depth; Light Summer is lighter and only cool-leaning.
Drape test: Compare navy with a light sky blue. If navy looks defining rather than heavy, you are probably Cool Summer; if it looks heavy and the light blue looks best, consider Light Summer.
Cool Summer vs. Soft Summer
What they share: Both are cool, muted Summer seasons with low-to-medium contrast.
What separates them: Which quality leads. Cool Summer is defined by coolness and carries slightly clearer colors; Soft Summer is defined by softness and needs smokier, greyer ones.
Drape test: Hold a raspberry and a smoky rose-brown under your chin in daylight. If the raspberry looks fresh rather than sharp, you are probably Cool Summer.
Cool Summer vs. Cool Winter (True Winter)
What they share: Both are fully cool seasons that suit silver, blue-based pinks and cool blues.
What separates them: Chroma and contrast. Cool Summer is soft and gentle; Cool Winter is clear, saturated and high-contrast.
Drape test: Compare a softened royal blue with a vivid cobalt. If the cobalt looks crisp and striking rather than overpowering, you are probably Cool Winter.

Making the change to a Cool Summer wardrobe
- Don't throw everything out. Sort your wardrobe into three piles: in-palette, close (wearable with help), and out.
- Move out-of-palette colors away from your face. Camel trousers or a black skirt can stay; a warm or black top can be worn under a soft gray or powder-blue layer, or with a scarf in your colors.
- Replace the pieces you wear most first: coat, everyday knitwear and your most-worn tops.
- Shop with your palette on your phone. Compare the item to your swatches in daylight before buying.
- Change makeup, jewelry and glasses frames early: they sit closest to your face and make the biggest difference for the least money.
- Give it four to six weeks. Most people notice they get more compliments and spend less time deciding what to wear.
Self-test: are you a Cool Summer?
Six or seven "yes" answers: Cool Summer is very likely. Four or five: you are probably a Summer; check the Soft Summer, Light Summer and Cool Winter comparisons below. Three or fewer: look at the other seasons in the Hathaura Color Standard, or book a professional analysis.
Cool Summer FAQ
What colors look best on a Cool Summer?
Cool, softly muted, light-to-medium colors: powder blue, sky blue, cornflower, slate, navy, seafoam, sea green, soft teal, dusty rose, raspberry, mauve, lavender and soft purple. Every color is blue-based with a little grey mixed in.
Can Cool Summers wear black?
Not near the face, ideally. Black is too dark and stark for gentle coloring. Navy, midnight and slate give the same definition. If you love black, wear it on the lower half or with a soft gray or powder-blue layer near your face.
Can Cool Summers wear white?
Choose a soft, slightly greyed white instead of bright optical white, which can look stark and make Cool Summer features look faded. Avoid warm ivory and cream, which can look yellow.
Is Cool Summer warm or cool?
Cool. It is the coolest of the Summer seasons and has no warmth in its palette, which is why silver beats gold and why warm colors make Cool Summer skin look sallow.
What is the difference between Cool Summer and Soft Summer?
Both are cool and muted. Cool Summer is defined first by coolness and can carry slightly clearer cool colors (raspberry, cornflower); Soft Summer is defined first by softness and looks best in smokier colors (rose-brown, pewter blue). Test a clear cool color and a smoky one side by side in daylight.
Can Cool Summers wear gold or silver jewelry?
Silver, white gold and platinum are the best match. Rose gold and pewter also work. Yellow gold, bronze and copper usually look brassy against cool skin; if you love gold, mix it with silver or keep it away from your face.
What hair color suits a Cool Summer?
Cool, ashy shades within about two levels of your natural color: ash blonde, cool beige blonde, ash brown, cool dark brown or soft silver. Avoid golden, copper, red and jet black.
Is a selfie color analysis app accurate for Cool Summer?
It can be a useful first read, but lighting matters a lot, because warm bulbs make cool skin look warmer. In our data, when people retook a selfie analysis, the season changed 62% of the time. Use daylight, no filters, and confirm with drape tests or a professional.
Can your season change from Cool Summer as you age?
Your underlying season usually stays the same, but contrast and depth often soften with age and greying hair. Many Cool Summers find the lighter, softer colors in the palette and their natural silver hair work beautifully later in life.
