Light Summer Color Palette: Best Colors & Celebrities

Light Summer is a light, cool-leaning season with soft, airy coloring and low contrast. It is defined first by lightness, then by coolness: its best colors are light, gentle and slightly blue-based, never dark or golden.

Moodboard and outfit are AI-generated illustrations. Celebrity photos are credited in the celebrities section.

If dark colors have always felt heavy on you, black makes you look tired, and a periwinkle shirt or a soft pink sweater makes people ask whether you have been on holiday, you may be a Light Summer. This guide covers how to recognize the season, the exact colors that flatter it (with hex codes you can shop with), what to avoid and why, how to build outfits and a capsule wardrobe, makeup and hair direction, and how to tell Light Summer apart from its closest neighbors.

How to recognize a Light Summer

Skin

Skin is light and cool-leaning: pink-beige, rosy fair, porcelain or light neutral-beige, often with a slightly translucent quality. The undertone leans cool but is not icy, so a little warmth does not ruin a color the way it would on a Cool Summer. Light Summer is most common on fair skin, but it also occurs on light-to-medium skin with a cool or neutral-cool cast, where the overall coloring is still light and gentle.

Eyes

Eyes are usually light and soft: light blue, grey-blue, blue-green, soft green, light cool hazel or, on deeper coloring, a soft medium brown with a light, gentle look. The color is clear enough to read as cool but never dark, intense or sparkling like a Winter.

Hair

Natural hair is light: ash blonde, light ash brown, beige blonde or a soft, light cool brown, often lighter in childhood and darkening a little with age. There is little red or gold in daylight. Hair alone is an unreliable clue, because dye, sun and age change it more than skin or eyes.

Signs you're a Light Summer

  • Dark colors look heavy on you. Black, charcoal, dark brown and deep burgundy sit in front of your face and make it look tired or older.
  • Light, cool colors (powder blue, soft pink, lavender, mint) make your skin look clear and fresh rather than washed out.
  • Your coloring is light overall: light hair, light eyes and light skin, with gentle rather than dramatic contrast between them.
  • Silver, white gold and rose gold look natural on you. Bright yellow gold can look brassy or make your skin look slightly yellow.
  • Very warm colors (orange, mustard, camel, rust) make your skin look sallow or ruddy, even in light versions.
  • You get compliments in airy, cool colors: periwinkle, sky blue, aqua, soft pink, lavender, mauve-pink.

Signs you're probably not a Light Summer

  • Medium and deep colors (navy, slate, deep teal, wine) look defining rather than heavy on you. That points toward Cool Summer or Soft Summer.
  • Peach, warm coral, golden cream and light camel look better on you than cool pinks and blues. That points toward Light Spring.
  • You have strong contrast between dark hair and light skin, or eyes that look vivid and crisp. That points toward a Winter season.
  • Your best colors are smoky and greyed, and clear light colors look too sweet on you. That points toward Soft Summer.

The most common mistype

The most common mistype is Light Spring. Both seasons are light and low-contrast, so in poor lighting they can look identical. The difference is the undertone: Light Summer looks better in cool, slightly blue-based light colors (periwinkle, soft pink, lavender); Light Spring looks better in warm, slightly yellow-based light colors (peach, warm coral, light golden green). The second most common mistype is Cool Summer, especially for Light Summers whose hair has darkened with age: both are cool and gentle, but Cool Summer can carry medium and darker colors such as navy and slate that look heavy on a Light Summer.

Light Summer contrast level

Contrast is the difference in depth between your skin, hair and eyes. Light Summers are typically low: the hair is only a little darker than the skin, and the eyes are light. That is why black with white overpowers a Light Summer, while soft periwinkle with soft pink, or a softened deep blue with powder blue, looks polished and natural.

stylist re-analyses on the Hathaura platform changed season (small sample)

Lighting changes everything. Warm indoor bulbs add yellow to every color and every skin tone, which can push a Light Summer toward Light Spring in a selfie, and a dim room or a harsh phone flash can add shadow and contrast that makes light coloring look deeper or cooler than it is. When people retook selfie analyses on ColorSnap AI (our own free tool), their season changed 62% of the time (56 of 90 retakes). When stylists re-analyzed a client on the Hathaura platform with a new photo, the season changed once in 15 re-analyses, a small sample but a very different picture. For a reliable read, test colors in indirect daylight near a window, with no makeup, no filters and hair pulled back, and compare two colors at a time. Compare color analysis apps.

Light Summer color palette: the best colors

Light Summer colors are light first and cool second. Think of the colors of a garden on an early summer morning: periwinkle and sky blue, aqua and mint, soft pink and mauve-pink, lavender and orchid. Every color is lifted toward light and leans slightly blue, which is what lets it sit in harmony with light, gentle coloring.

The palette is built on light-to-medium values. Very dark colors look heavy and should be kept away from the face, so the most flattering choices sit at the light end, with softened deep blue, deep purple and navy-purple as the darkest shades you need. Light blues, aquas, pinks and lavenders are your workhorses.

Use the measured ranges as a shopping check: Light Summer colors sit high on the lightness scale, with hues concentrated in blue, aqua-green, cool pink and violet, and a gentle, mid-to-soft chroma. A color that looks "golden", "earthy", "dark" or "neon" is almost always outside the range.

Tap any color to see it large, copy its hex code and see what it pairs with.

Colors to avoid for Light Summer

  • Anything dark and heavy (black, charcoal, dark brown, deep burgundy) overpowers light coloring and makes the face look tired.
  • Anything warm or golden (orange, mustard, camel, rust, tomato red) clashes with the cool-leaning undertone and can make skin look sallow.
  • Anything neon or very saturated (fuchsia, cobalt, lime, fiery red) is louder than your coloring and arrives before you do.
  • Stark extremes (jet black, optical white, and the two together) create far more contrast than your coloring has.

Best neutrals for Light Summer

Your neutrals are light and cool-leaning: soft white, dove grey, light taupe, pale rosy beige and dusty rose, plus soft periwinkle, cool blue and a softened deep blue for definition.

Swap black for deep blue or navy-purple. Swap bright white for soft white or soft pink. Swap camel, tan and warm brown for light taupe, dove grey or dusty rose.

Neutrals do most of the work in a Light Summer wardrobe, and many of yours are soft colors rather than greys or browns. Build trousers, coats and knitwear in them, then add pink, aqua or lavender near the face.

Light Summer outfits, clothing and color combinations

The best Light Summer combinations repeat the light, low contrast of your coloring. Tone-on-tone outfits (several shades of one blue) and analogous outfits (neighboring colors such as lavender and dusty rose) look effortless. When you want more interest, use a balanced contrast: two light, cool colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, such as soft pink with sage green.

Keep the lightest color nearest your face and the darkest color furthest from it. Use proportions to keep outfits calm: about 60% main color (usually a soft neutral or blue), 30% secondary color, and 10% accent, worn near the face or as a single accessory.

Light Summer capsule wardrobe

A 20-piece Light Summer capsule built on the 60/30/10 rule: mostly neutrals, a layer of secondary colors, and a few accents. In this season the softest blues, dusty rose and navy-purple do the job that greys and browns do elsewhere; soft white, dove grey and light taupe basics fit in alongside them. Prints, fabrics, metals and jewelry for Light Summer

Light Summer prints: watercolor floral, tonal paisley, plaid, tweed and leaf print in Sky Blue #7FCCE5, Soft Pink #EBAFB8, Lavender #9D7FB5, Mint #8FC4AD
Illustration (AI-generated)

Prints and patterns

  • Choose light, delicate prints with gentle internal contrast: subtle stripes, gingham, seersucker, small geometrics, paisley, botanicals, florals and lace in blues, pinks, lavenders and soft greens.
  • Keep at least 60–70% of a print's colors inside your palette, and make sure the print has no stark black-on-white areas, dark grounds or golden, earthy tones.
  • Small-to-medium prints look most natural. Bold neon prints, large busy patterns, heavy plaids, tropical motifs and psychedelic graphics overpower light coloring.
  • Animal and tribal prints rarely work; if you love them, choose a very soft, light, cool version (pale grey snake) and wear it away from the face.

Fabrics and finishes

  • Light, soft-sheen textures echo Light Summer coloring: cotton voile, seersucker, linen, chambray, fine merino, cashmere, jersey, silk, chiffon and lace.
  • Heavy, dark or very high-shine fabrics (patent leather, lamé, mirror sequins, thick black leather) add a weight and hardness your coloring does not have. For evening, choose silk satin, chiffon, lace or a subtle silver thread.
  • Texture adds interest without contrast. A tone-on-tone outfit in three textures (knit, silk, linen) looks richer than one flat fabric.

Best metals for Light Summer

Because the undertone leans cool but not icy, Light Summers can wear more than silver. Matte silver, white gold and rose gold are the easiest match; soft, brushed gold and light bronze also work when the shine is muted. Delicate pieces suit light coloring better than chunky ones, and very bright yellow gold is best mixed with silver or kept away from the face.

Best

Matte silver, White gold, Rose gold

Also good

Brushed soft gold, Pewter, Bronze

Use with care

High-shine yellow gold, Copper, Blackened or heavily oxidized metals

Stones: Moonstone, Pearl, Rose quartz, Amethyst, Peridot, Light smoky quartz, Aquamarine, Blue topaz.

  • Glasses frames: clear, soft grey, light blue, rose, lavender, soft pink-tortoise or thin silver and rose gold metal. Avoid black, dark tortoiseshell and heavy frames.
  • Nails: sheer pink, soft rose, mauve-pink, lavender, light berry, soft periwinkle; sheer, cream or soft-sheen finishes.
  • Bags and shoes: soft grey, light taupe, dusty rose, soft navy, blush and pale metallic silver leather rather than black or tan.

Foundation

Look for cool or neutral-cool shades with a pink or rosy-beige base, in a light, sheer or natural finish; light coverage suits light coloring better than heavy layers. Shades with a strong yellow or golden base can look like a mask. Test in daylight on the jawline and compare two shades at a time.

Blush and bronzer

Soft pink, light rose, muted mauve and a light, pinkish peach, applied sheer and blended. Skip orange-based bronzers; for definition, use a cool taupe or a soft, light brown contour.

Soft Pink #EBAFB8Mauve Pink #D89AA5Coral Pink #F49999

Lips

Soft rosy pink and sheer pink nudes for every day; soft berry, light raspberry and orchid for evening. Satin or sheer textures look best. Avoid orange, brick, dark plum and very bright fuchsia.

Mauve Pink #D89AA5Rose #E67373Plum #B767A2

Eyes

Light pink, muted mauve, lavender, cool taupe, soft grey and soft periwinkle. Deep purple or a soft navy adds definition for evening without the weight of black.

Lavender #9D7FB5Dusty Rose #C7A5B8Soft Periwinkle #9BB4D4

Liner and mascara

Soft charcoal, soft brown, navy or deep purple liner rather than jet black, which can look harsh on light coloring. Brown-black or a light coat of black mascara gives definition without heaviness.

Best hair colors for Light Summer

Light Summers look best in hair colors that stay light and cool-leaning: ash blonde, beige blonde, pearl or champagne blonde, light ash brown and soft silver.

Avoid colors that add darkness or warmth your skin does not have: dark brown, jet black, blue-black, golden or honey blonde, copper and red.

Dimension helps. Fine, cool-toned highlights or babylights one or two shades around your natural color look brighter and softer than a single flat shade.

Talking to your colourist

  • Bring this phrase: "I'm a Light Summer: light and cool-leaning. I want a light, soft, beige-ash color with gentle contrast, nothing golden, brassy or dark."
  • Ask for beige, ash or pearl tones (often called N-A, A or beige series) rather than golden, copper or warm tones.
  • Keep the color within about two levels of your natural depth, and err on the lighter side: going much darker is the most common way Light Summers lose their glow.
  • Ask for a cool gloss or toner every few months to keep brassiness away, and use a purple shampoo at home if you are lightened.
  • Bring photos of the result you want in daylight, not under salon lights.

Light Summer going grey and over 50

Going grey as a Light Summer

  • Natural grey on a Light Summer is usually a soft, light silver or pearl that suits the season well, because the palette is already light and cool.
  • If you are going grey, light blending (ash, pearl or silver highlights) eases the transition better than covering it with one dark shade, which adds contrast and weight as roots grow.
  • Once your hair is silver, the lightest colors in your palette (soft periwinkle, soft pink, aqua, lavender) look especially fresh near the face, and soft white becomes one of your best neutrals.

Light Summer over 50

  • Your season does not usually change with age, but your coloring often gets lighter and softer still. The darkest shades in the palette may start to look heavy; keep them for trousers, coats and bags.
  • Black and very dark colors become harder to wear with time. Deep blue, navy-purple and soft grey keep definition without adding age.
  • Cool color near the face (soft pink, mauve-pink, a light rose blush) restores color that skin loses over time.
  • Sheer and satin makeup and soft-sheen fabrics stay flattering; heavy, matte coverage and very high-shine finishes can emphasize texture.

Light Summer vs. Light Spring

What they share: Both are light seasons with delicate coloring and low contrast.

What separates them: Undertone. Light Summer is cool-leaning and slightly softer; Light Spring is warm-leaning and slightly clearer.

Drape test: Hold a cool soft pink and a warm peach under your chin in daylight. The one that makes skin look clear and even (rather than grey or yellow) is your side of the line.

Light Summer vs. Cool Summer (True Summer)

What they share: Both are cool, soft Summer seasons with low contrast.

What separates them: Value and coolness. Light Summer is lighter and only cool-leaning; Cool Summer is fully cool and can carry medium depth.

Drape test: Compare a light periwinkle with navy. If navy looks heavy and the periwinkle looks best, you are probably Light Summer; if navy looks defining, consider Cool Summer.

Making the change to a Light Summer wardrobe

  1. Don't throw everything out. Sort your wardrobe into three piles: in-palette, close (wearable with help), and out.
  2. Move out-of-palette colors away from your face. Dark trousers or a black skirt can stay; a black or warm top can be worn under a soft pink or periwinkle layer, or with a scarf in your colors.
  3. Replace the pieces you wear most first: coat, everyday knitwear and your most-worn tops. A light coat changes the most outfits at once.
  4. Shop with your palette on your phone. Compare the item to your swatches in daylight before buying.
  5. Change makeup, jewelry and glasses frames early: they sit closest to your face and make the biggest difference for the least money.
  6. Give it four to six weeks. Most people notice they get more compliments and spend less time deciding what to wear.

Self-test: are you a Light Summer?

0/7Tick every statement that is true for you.

Six or seven "yes" answers: Light Summer is very likely. Four or five: you are probably a light or Summer season; check the Light Spring and Cool Summer comparisons below. Three or fewer: look at the other seasons in the Hathaura Color Standard, or book a professional analysis.

Light Summer FAQ

What colors look best on a Light Summer?

Light, cool-leaning, gentle colors: soft periwinkle, sky blue, cornflower, aqua, mint, sage green, soft pink, mauve-pink, dusty rose, orchid and lavender, with a softened deep blue and navy-purple for definition. Every color is lifted toward light and leans slightly blue.

Can Light Summers wear black?

Not near the face, ideally. Black is too dark and heavy for light coloring. Deep blue, navy-purple and soft grey give the same definition. If you love black, wear it on the lower half or with a soft pink or periwinkle layer near your face.

Can Light Summers wear white?

Choose soft white, or a very light cool color such as soft pink or pale blue, instead of bright optical white, which can look stark and make light features look faded. Avoid golden cream, which can look yellow.

Is Light Summer warm or cool?

Cool-leaning. Its first quality is lightness and its second is coolness, so it is less cool than Cool Summer. That is why Light Summers can often wear rose gold and soft gold, and why the season is so often confused with Light Spring.

What is the difference between Light Summer and Light Spring?

Both are light and low-contrast. Light Summer leans cool (periwinkle, soft pink, lavender); Light Spring leans warm (peach, warm coral, light golden green). Test a cool and a warm light color side by side in daylight.

Can Light Summers wear gold or silver jewelry?

Both, with the right finish. Matte silver, white gold and rose gold are the best match; soft, brushed gold and light bronze also work. Very bright, high-shine yellow gold and copper usually look brassy against cool-leaning skin.

What hair color suits a Light Summer?

Light, cool-leaning shades within about two levels of your natural color: ash blonde, beige or pearl blonde, light ash brown or soft silver. Avoid going much darker, and avoid golden, copper, red and jet black.

Is a selfie color analysis app accurate for Light Summer?

It can be a useful first read, but lighting matters a lot, because warm bulbs make cool-leaning skin look warmer and shadows make light coloring look deeper. In our data, when people retook a selfie analysis, the season changed 62% of the time. Use daylight, no filters, and confirm with drape tests or a professional.

Can your season change from Light Summer as you age?

Your underlying season usually stays the same. Hair may darken a little in adulthood and then lighten again as it greys, but the overall coloring stays light and cool-leaning. Many Light Summers find their natural silver hair and the lightest colors in the palette work beautifully later in life.
